Lansing’s Potter Park Zoo Welcomes a Brand New Bundle of Joy
Potter Park Zoo in Lansing is home to many animals. And another has just been added to the list.
Congratulations are in order, because Potter Park Zoo has welcomed a brand new bundle of joy into the world! A baby female eastern bongo calf who was born on Tuesday, December 10th.

Here's a look at the brand calf (and its birth, so, be warned) that Potter Park Zoo posted on their social media.
This is especially important news because the eastern bongo is a "critically endangered member of the antelope family". So, this is a pretty big deal.

The calf is healthy and so is mom, Zahara, who has shown great maternal instincts as a first-time parent. The dad's name is Moose. Also cool to note, Zahara was also born at Potter Park Zoo back in March of 2022. Moose was later brought to the zoo as part of "the Eastern Bongo Species Survival Plan (SSP)—a collaborative effort between zoos accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) to protect and sustain vulnerable species."
At this time, there are less than 100 eastern bongos in the wild, and only 149 in AZA-accredited zoos across the country.
There's no word on the baby's name just yet. But, there is word on when she'll be making her debut to the public in her outdoor habitat. That should be sometime in spring 2025.
