Can You Bury a Pet in Your Backyard in Michigan?

The short answer is yes. But the long answer comes with some rules and guidelines that, when not followed, could result in a minimum fine of $300 or a minimum of 30 days in jail.

Michigan's Rules for Burying a Pet at Home

Michigan's Bodies of Dead Animals Act requires that individual graves must be:

• At least 2 feet below the natural surface
• Separated from other graves by at least 2.5 feet
• Closed within 24 hours of opening
• Limited to 100 graves per acre

However, the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development states that if there is a potential for toxicological contamination to humans, the animal's body may need to be disposed of by a different means.
