My son celebrated his 16th birthday this week and I was looking for a unique way to give him some cash/gas money for his birthday. So, I went to the website with all kinds of creative ideas: Pinterest. Now, let me start by saying that I really am not a crafty person. At all. But with a little Pinterest research, I discovered the "money cake." Here's a photo of the money cake that I made:

The supplies needed for my money cake were: some foam from the floral department at the Dollar Tree to use as your cake layers, poster board to put around the foam to make the 'cake' a little prettier (optional--and I just taped it around the sides of the foam), decorating tape (on sale at Michael's) to hold the dollar bills, glue to the attach the pieces of foam, clear rubber bands to wrap around the bills and about 100 $1 bills. (The balloons on top were from a previous birthday cake that we had purchased.)

This is what I used, but trust me, there are many different ways you can make your own money cake. Once I got the hang of securing the bills with the decorating tape, it really didn't take that long to make and it was a big hit with my son. I know this because he immediately started taking pictures of it and was sending the pictures to his friends. (Teeanagers...) My husband also thought it was "one of the coolest things he's ever seen."  If you want more instructions or if you decide to make your own money cake, please send me an email.
