A Tale of Two Winters in Gaylord

It's been a wild couple of winters in Northern Michigan, especially around Gaylord.

Last winter - the winter of 2023-24 - saw the lowest total snowfall on record for the Gaylord area, according to National Weather Service records. An unusually low 71.3" of snow had fallen in Gaylord by the end of February last year.

Mother Nature apparently decided she needed to make up for that this winter. The winter of 2024-25 in Gaylord has been the snowiest one ever recorded - nearly 182"! Here - let me do the math for you - that's 15 feet and 2 inches. That's just about enough to bury an adult giraffe.

And the winter's not yet over.

A Snow Famine in Southeastern Michigan

By contrast, snowfall this winter has been below-average in much of southeastern Michigan - including areas like Detroit, Flint, and Ann Arbor.

In a typical winter, Detroit would have recorded nearly 37" of snow by the end of February. This winter, the total stands at 26.5" so far.

Why Has There Been Such a Variance in Snowfall Totals?

Weather experts say the wide range of snowfall totals in Michigan this year can largely be attributed to the shift from an El Niño pattern last year to a La Niña one this winter.
