America Picks This Michigan City As the Worst Place to Live or Visit

Ouch.

Americans were recently asked to name the worst place in the whole country to either live or visit - and a Michigan city came out on top.

And this may come as a surprise, but it wasn't Detroit.

Ranker.com asked visitors to upvote or downvote more than 200 cities across the United States based on their suitability for residents or visitors.

Five Michigan cities were represented on the list.

Monroe came in at #162. Hell, Michigan was #116. Saginaw was #108.

Detroit ranked as the 16th worst place to live or visit in America, according to Ranker.

What Michigan City Ranks As the Nation's Worst Place to Live or Visit?

Of all 200+ cities included on this survey from Ranker, more Americans say the absolute place to live or visit would be Flint, Michigan, than anywhere else.

Why Does Flint Have Such a Bad Reputation?

The figures don't lie. Flint's population has been in a downward spiral since peaking at nearly 200,000 residents back in 1960. Worldpopulationreview.com pegs Flint's current population at around 78,600 residents. This drastic change has led to an overabundance of abandoned buildings and has hastened urban decay. One by one, many of the city's largest employers packed up and left town, leading to high unemployment rates among those who stayed in the city. This, in turn, has resulted in high crime rates.

As someone who was born in Flint, it's sad to see the city as a shell of its former self. I'm sure promoting tourism for Flint is not an easy job, but the city still does have a lot to offer, such as the Flint Institute of Arts, Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium.

Flint's seen some hard times, but it doesn't deserve to reign supreme on Ranker's list of America's worst places to live or visit.
