Will Urban Meyer Ever Coach Again?

Three-time National Championship football coach Urban Meyer was fired late Wednesday by Jacksonville Jaguars owner Shad Khan.

Meyer's tenure in the pros can only be categorized as a disaster.  The Jaguars are 2-11 with four games remaining in the 2021 season, his only year in the NFL.

So now the question is:  Will Urban Meyer ever coach again?

Let's get the easy stuff out of the way first:

ANOTHER SHOT IN THE NFL?

Given all the reported problems that Meyer had in dealing with NFL players and assistant coaches, It is doubtful that he'll ever coach again in the NFL.  Not many college coaches have had success in transitioning to the NFL in recent years.

Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll is an exception to that, but he was an NFL failure before his success at Southern California (which was clouded due to the Reggie Bush scandal).

WHAT ABOUT ANOTHER COLLEGE JOB?

Some colleges are so desperate to win that they'll overlook almost anything that coaches have done (or reportedly did) to win big.  Just look at Iona and Rick Pitino in college basketball.  So somebody could make a call to Urb at some point.

But in the short-term, I doubt that he'll be coaching at the big-time level.  I don't see him coaching until at least 2023, if at all.

ANOTHER JOB IN TV?

This is the most likely scenario, if he does anything.  He had a successful stint as an analyst with ESPN in 2011 (before he went to Ohio State), and he had an excellent stint as a studio analyst with FOX in 2019 and 2020.

He's very good on television, and his name still carries a lot of weight, despite the baggage.  He could have a job on TV as soon as 2022.

WHAT ABOUT AGE AND HEALTH?

If he doesn't ever coach again, this will be the reason why.  He is 57 years old now and he has what is termed an "arachnoid cyst" in his brain that has caused him problems throughout his coaching career.  He's had other health issues, plus he'll have whatever money he gets as a buyout from the Jaguars.

Because of that, he could sit back and not do anything for awhile.  But I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the itch in 2023 or later to coach at the college level.

But like I always say, this is the coaching profession.  And these guys will do anything.
