What’s Your Preference, Tiger Stadium or Comerica Park?
The Tigers have played in two amazing stadiums over the years, but which one is the best?
I made my first visit to Tiger Stadium in 1967. The Tigers played the Kansas City As that day. The next year they moved to Oakland.
Tiger Stadium was located at Michigan and Trumbell in downtown Detroit. Actually, it was located in Corktown. The Tigers played there for many years dating back to the early 1900s. It was called Navin, Bennett and Tiger Stadium.
I saw the Tigers win the 1984 World Series over the San Diego Padres there. Of course, Kirk Gibson had that dramatic home run off Goose Gossage to ice the game. I probably saw 30-40 games in Tiger Stadium. The greats played there like Ty Cobb, Charlie Gehringer, Al Kaline, and just a lot of other great ballplayers from other teams over the many years. I loved the smell of hot dogs, freshly cut grass and cigars. It was just a haven for the great baseball fans across Michigan and the world. I loved Tiger Stadium and will always cherish my memories of watching ball games there.
On the other hand, there is Comerica Park. Comerica Park was first opened on April 11th, 2000. I’ve gone there many times and really love that park. I was lucky enough in 2014 to play in an actual baseball game there sponsored by Miller Beer. I actually hit a double in that game off a 22-year-old pitcher from Oakland Junior College. It was a thrill of a lifetime. I wore an actual Tiger jersey with the number six on it because that was Al Kaline’s number and the number I wore in high school.
Comerica Park is a great ballpark. Now they just need to get to another World Series and win one.
