Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor has officially closed.

If you spent part of the weekend aimlessly browsing the internet and thought, "Wait a minute... is Pinball Pete's closing?", first of all, we feel you. Second, take a deep breath, East Lansing friends. Your beloved arcade isn't going anywhere.

Pinball Pete's in Ann Arbor Has Closed

Yes, the Pinball Pete's location in Ann Arbor's Galleria Mall closed this past weekend, and yes, that stings. That basement on South University was practically a rite of passage for generations of students—the place you went to forget about finals, blow off steam, or pretend you were "just going to play one game" before losing track of time (and quarters).

But here's the part that often gets overlooked: Pinball Pete's wasn't born in Ann Arbor. It started right here in East Lansing.

Pinball Pete's Origin Story

Long before it became a legend associated with the Wolverines, Pinball Pete's was a homegrown business fueled by kids on bikes, a used pinball machine, and an entrepreneurial spirit that somehow included selling sodas for a dime.

That garage business eventually grew into a former donut shop, a pink elephant on the roof, and an arcade that would become a Michigan icon. Fun fact: a cowboy named Pete was supposed to ride the elephant. That never happened, and you know what? The elephant did just fine on its own.

While Ann Arbor says goodbye to its longtime location (temporarily, as a new location is on the way), the East Lansing Pinball Pete's remains open, vibrant, and proud to carry on the legacy that started it all.

At its heart, Pinball Pete's has never been just about games. It's about having fun together. First dates. Family nights. Beating your mom at a racing game. Losing to a kid who's way better than you. So yes, let's raise a glass to South U. But then, grab some change and head to East Lansing, the place where the story of the pink elephant began and where it remains more alive than ever.

Plus, get ready for the new spot in Ann Arbor at 500 E. Liberty Street. It could be open as soon as January.
