New Venison-Flavored Whiskey is Made with Actual Deer Meat
At this point in 2020 we could all probably use a drink... but would you sip on a venison-flavored whiskey?
Because it's now a thing.
Tamworth Distilling is releasing "Deerslayer", a 40.5 % ABV whiskey they say is "flavored flora and fauna of New Hampshire in autumn".
Here's how it's made:
The small batch distillery sources their red deer venison from a local New Hampshire farm, then hand-chops the meat and adds cranberries, porcini mushrooms, juniper berries, and green peppercorns.
They let it ferment overnight "to accentuate the meat’s delectable gaminess", then slow-smoke it over a mix of seasoned branches from New Hampshire’s boreal forests.
A three-year-aged white whiskey serves as the "backbone", which like all Tamworth spirits, is made from a neutral grain spirit base they distill from local organic corn, organic rye, and malt.
The end result is TRULY unique whiskey, characterized by savory and smokey notes "with a subtle spice on the palate and a lingering finish."
Huh. I don't even LIKE venison and I think this whiskey sounds pretty good. I'd give it a try at least. What do you think, is Deerslayer up your alley?
Deerslayer will officially be released Nov. 14, and is available for pre-order now. However, you do have to know someone in NH who can gab up your venison whiskey for you, as reservations are for in-store pick-up only, at least for now anyway. Who knows though, maybe someday you'll see it on a liquor store shelf near you. Follow Tamworth Distillery on Facebook for updates.
Deerslayer isn't the only kind-of crazy spirit they make at Tamworth. They've also got a Spiced Maple Vodka, a Thai Chili Gin, a Black Walnut Cordial, and SO many more. Personally, I'd LOVE a glass of their Old Hampshire Applejack right about now, a cider made with 100% grown and pressed New Hampshire Apples with "whiskey-like notes of vanilla, cinnamon, and clove" -- YUM!
