Dangerous Heat Wave Hits Mid-Michigan: Cooling Centers Open
With high temperatures forecast to be in the 90s for several days in Mid-Michigan — and humidity levels to make it feel even hotter than that — nearly two dozen civic buildings, libraries and other organizations have been established as "cooling centers" in Ingham, Clinton, Eaton and Shiawassee Counties.
What to Expect from the Heat Wave
According to WILX News 10 Meteorologist Colton Cichoracki in Lansing, "the forecast calls for high temperatures in the lower 90s today, middle 90s for Sunday and Monday, and then lower 90s for Tuesday." High humidity may push heat index values to 100º or more.
Cooling centers are essential during heat waves like this one, especially for vulnerable individuals such as the elderly, children and infants, and people with certain medical conditions. Residents without air conditioning, low-income households that may try to avoid using air conditioning to save money, and outdoor workers such as construction workers, landscapers and delivery personnel may also be at risk.

Heat waves are also particularly dangerous for unhoused individuals who may not have access to shelter or air conditioning.
Recognizing the Signs of Heat Exhaustion
According to the Red Cross, "extreme heat is deadly and kills more people than any other weather event".

If your home is hotter than 85º inside, you should consider going to a cooling center. You should also seek relief if you're sweating heavily or start feeling weak or dizzy.
