New research reveals that 8 of the 50 most dangerous cities in the United States are right here in Michigan, with two cities claiming spots in the Top 10.

The report, issued by NeighborhoodScout.com, bases its research on the number of violent crimes per 1000 residents. Only cities with populations greater than 25,000 were included in the report.

8. Jackson

Jackson's violent crime rate of 11.8 per 1000 residents ranks it as the 8th most dangerous city in Michigan, and 50th most dangerous in the nation.

7. Battle Creek

Battle Creek ranks as the 7th most dangerous city in Michigan, with 12 violent crimes reported for every 1000 residents. That's puts it at #47 nationally.

6. Flint

Did you think Flint would rank higher on this list? There are actually 5 more cities in Michigan considered to be more dangerous. Flint's violent crime rate of 12.5 per 1000 residents puts it 42nd in the nation.

The Detroit suburb of Inkster ranks as the 5th most dangerous city in Michigan with 14.1 violent crimes per 1000 residents. That puts it at 29th in the nation.

4. Lansing

Michigan's capital city is its 4th-most dangerous, with 15.7 violent crimes reported per 1000 residents. That makes it 17th-most dangerous in the country.

3. Kalamazoo

The 3rd-most dangerous city in Michigan is Kalamazoo, with 16.8 violent crimes reported per 1000 residents. That's 12th-worst in the nation.

2. Detroit

Michigan's biggest city is not its most dangerous, but close. 23 residents out of every 1000 in Detroit are victims of violent crime, putting the city at 6th-most dangerous in America.
