These Are the 25 Most Dangerous Small Cities in Michigan
Michigan's pretty diverse. We've got big metropolitan areas like Detroit and Grand Rapids. There are plenty of smaller towns and rural areas. We have tons of forest, and of course, lots of lakes.
But some places in Michigan are not as safe as others.
WalletHub recently released its list of the "Best Small Cities in America (2025)", and a deep dive into their methodology reveals some disturbing facts about Michigan.
Determining the Most Dangerous Small Cities in Michigan
The WalletHub study considers several key factors in determining America's best small cities, including affordability, economic health, education, quality of life, and safety. They narrow their focus to cities with populations between 25,000 and 100,000 people.

The study looks at statistics for more than 1300 small American cities, and if you check those safety rankings, you might raise an eyebrow - especially if you're a Michigander.
To be clear, the "safety" metric doesn't just focus on violent crime, but other criteria as well, such as property crimes, motor vehicle deaths (alcohol-related and otherwise), and drug poisonings.

The majority of the 39 Michigan cities included in this survey are among the "more dangerous" half of the cities listed. Two small Michigan cities are even among the 50 most dangerous small cities in the entire United States, according to the figures published by WalletHub!
