But what is danger in this sense? Turns out this list is about more than crime rates.

What Actually Makes a City "Dangerous"?

It's all about how safe you are both physically and financially.

The personal finance website WalletHub looked at nearly 200 American cities in three major categories: home and community safety (the biggie), natural disaster risk, and financial safety.

They factored in things like violent crime rates (assaults, shootings, etc.), property crime, traffic fatalities, police/first responder presence, the risk of disasters like floods or tornadoes, poverty, unemployment, and even how many people are uninsured.

So What Makes the Worst Cities... the Worst?

When you flip WalletHub's "Safest Cities in America" list upside down, the most dangerous cities usually have a combo platter of high violent crime rates, serious poverty issues, higher unemployment and financial instability, and sometimes added risk from natural disasters.

This list exposes dangers that aren't just on the street — it's also about what's happening in people's wallets and daily lives.

How Did Detroit Do?

Um.

Well, if you flip the "Safest Cities in America" list upside down, Detroit would rank as the 4th most dangerous city in the country for 2026.

The Motor City unfortunately has one of the highest violent crime rates in the U.S., along with significant poverty and employment challenges. It's a vicious cycle, really. Higher poverty leads to more instability. More instability leads to higher crime. Higher crime is a result of higher poverty, and so forth.

The Bottom Line

Not trying to pile on Detroit.

Detroit has amazing culture, history, and people. But it's a victim of that vicious cycle. The economic challenges of the past several decades, when paired with other safety issues and infrastructure challenges, create a hole that's difficult to climb out of.
