How WalletHub Ranked America’s Colleges

WalletHub recently released its report on "College and University Rankings" for 2026. Study authors evaluated more than 800 institutions of higher education across the United States in an effort to determine which ones offered the most educational bang for the proverbial buck. Among the metrics considered:

  • Student Selectivity—things like admission rates, average standardized test scores, and the percentage of freshmen students who were among the top 10% of their graduating class in high school;
  • Cost & Financing—tuition fees and typical student loan debt;
  • Faculty Resources—average class sizes, and student-faculty ratios;
  • Campus Safety—including crime and arrest rates;
  • Campus Experience—diversity of the student population, the availability of study-abroad programs, and the percentage of students who live on-campus;
  • Educational Outcomes—graduation and retention rates, plus the number of bachelor's degrees awarded per student enrolled; and
  • Career Outcomes—how quickly graduates get full-time employment after leaving school, median earnings, and student loan default statistics.

Michigan Universities That Missed the Top 10
