Rent prices continue to climb across much of the country, but there are still plenty of places where renters can find a more affordable place to call home.

A new report from HomeSnacks ranks Michigan communities with the lowest monthly median rent, and it turns out there are more than a dozen towns where you can find a place for less than $900 a month on average.

Why Rent Is Still Affordable in These Michigan Towns

As a general rule, the closer you get to a bigger city, the more you can expect to pay. While there are some notable exceptions, most of the Michigan towns where average rents are lowest are quite rural.

The Four Michigan Towns With Rent Under $750

The HomeSnacks study found that four Michigan towns have median rents of $750 or less per month — and three of those four are in the Upper Peninsula: Iron Mountain, Menominee, and Ishpeming.

A dozen more places throughout the state have rent rates of $900 or less.

Cheap Rent Isn't the Only Factor to Consider

Of course, rent is only one piece of the puzzle when deciding where to live. Factors like job opportunities, schools, commute times, amenities, and quality of life all vary greatly from one city to another.

Still, if you're a Michigander looking to stretch your budget, the 16 Michigan towns highlighted below (there really are 16 — don't be fooled by the tie at #15) might provide an opportunity to save hundreds of dollars per month compared to many of the state's larger and more expensive housing markets.
