A new study to determine the "Safest Cities in America" for 2024 finds one Michigan city near the bottom of the list.

The personal finance website WalletHub looked at a variety of factors to determine whether cities were considered to be safe or not, including everything from accidental deaths to identity theft to natural disasters. More than 40 key indicators were evaluated as part of the study.

Detroit did not fare well.

Why Is Detroit So Dangerous?

Detroit is tied for the most assaults per capita in the entire country, despite also being tied for the highest number of law enforcement employees per capita.

The city ranks 6th-worst in the country in regard to home and community safety - things like murder, mass shootings and other violent offenses; traffic and pedestrian fatalities; and the percentage of residents who are homeless.

Danger doesn't always refer to one's physical safety.

According to data unearthed by WalletHub, Detroit is also the worst place in the country for financial safety. No other major American city has an unemployment rate as high as Detroit does. Other factors that tank Detroit's financial safety ranking include its poverty rate, its foreclosure rate, its share of uninsured or underinsured drivers, and personal bankruptcy rates.
