‘Drive By Fish Fry’ in Pinckney, Michigan
One thing the pandemic can't stop is the fish fry dinners at St. Mary's Catholic School and Parish in Pinckney. This 25 year old tradition may look a little different this year, but it's still a go. Not only will St. Mary's have a new crew of volunteers but they'll be doing a "Drive By Fish Fry."
Bob Phipps and his wife, Cathy, have been participating in St. Mary's fish fry dinners for the last fifteen years, and they told MLive that the new volunteers brought their creativity this year.
We had to account for everything from drive-thru traffic flow to Plexiglass, and even childcare to recruit new volunteers. We tackled all this while making sure to maintain our primary goal, which is to serve a great dinner for a good cause. It’s been uplifting to see our school community step up, and we are coming out stronger for it.
The "Drive By Fish Fry" kicked off February 19 and goes until March 26. The event brings people from all over the world like Ireland, Canada, Japan and more, but because they're offering carry-out only, only around five hundred dinners have been served weekly. Even though the event might not be getting as much attention as previous years, Phipps says he's grateful to be feeding anyone, even if it's regulars.
You can choose from two different fish dinners at St. Mary's in Pinckney for just $10. The first option is a classic "Fried on Friday", which features fried pollock, fries, coleslaw, mac and cheese and dessert. The second option is, "Bated and Baked", a lightly seasoned baked cod fillet, gluten free au gratin potatoes, coleslaw, mac and cheese and a dessert. This year's dessert is a snickerdoodle bar. Well, I'm sold. Who's going with me?
