Oklahoma-based pre-cooked meat producer BrucePac is recalling nearly 12 million pounds of meat and poultry-based products that were distributed to thousands of stores and schools throughout the nation including Michigan, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
What BrucePac Products Are Being Recalled?
The products being recalled were produced between May 31 and October 8, 2024, according to the FSIS. Look under or inside the USDA mark of inspection for the establishment numbers "51205 or P-51205" - if either of those numbers are present, the product should be discarded or taken back to the store where it was purchased for a refund.
Some of the brand names affected include 7Eleven, Amazon Fresh, Atkins, El Monterey, Great Value, Jenny Craig, Kroger, Marketside, Meijer, Michael Angelo’s Gourmet Foods, Michelina’s, and Trader Joe’s. Affected products may be labeled in many other ways.
The USDA has provided a searchable link to determine whether the products in your home are currently part of the recall. The recall includes a wide range of products from ready-to-eat chicken salads to taquitos to ready-to-heat chicken alfredo and many more. Consumers are urged to check any and all pre-packaged foods in their possession against this list to identify potentially contaminated products.
What Is Listeria?
According to the Mayo Clinic, "listeria infection is a foodborne bacterial illness that can be very serious for pregnant women, people older than 65 and people with weakened immune systems. It's most commonly caused by eating improperly processed deli meats and unpasteurized milk products."
No illnesses have been reported in relation to this recall yet, according to the USDA. However, the risk is there.
