Winter maintenance is going on up on the Soo Locks. According to MLive.com, they shut down on January 15th and will re-open March 25th (so find another route for your freighter ship full of iron ore until then)

As part of the maintenance, they drained the locks. One of the bigger locks - the Poe Locks - takes 22 million gallons of water to raise the level so that ships can pass through. It took 16 hours and a bunch of giant pumps, but they drained that thing last weekend. From the photos, my first reaction is - I thought those locks would be deeper. Huh. Who knew?

And, If you haven't ever been up to see the Soo, it's worth the trip this summer.
