Why do people color eggs at Easter? And where did that tradition start?

My kids are grown-up now, but we used to color eggs every year when they were little. And, to be honest, I just figured it was some marketing ploy thought up recently to separate me from my money. I was wrong - if any of these theories are right. According to mentalfloss.com, the practice is at least 700 years old - and maybe much older. And, it's (possibly) much more tied into the history of Christianity than I ever knew.
