It's all fun and games until a Michigan snowplow destroys your mailbox.

One minute you're sipping coffee, the next you're bundled up, staring at the remains of what was your mailbox, wondering why winter hates you.

But here's the real question: who pays for the damage?

Why Snowplows Get So Close to Mailboxes

First, let's be clear: snowplows do have to get close to mailboxes so the mail can actually be delivered. If there's a huge pile of snow in front of your mailbox, the mail carrier can't do their job. Simple as that.

Now, about that unfortunate collision: it doesn't matter if your mailbox got knocked down, but how it got knocked down.

In most Michigan counties, road crews will only replace mailboxes that were physically struck by the snowplow, and usually only with a standard mailbox and post. If you want something fancier, you're on your own kid.

When the Road Commission Will Pay

But here's the catch—most mailbox damage isn't caused by the snowplow actually hitting the mailbox. It's caused by the sheer force of the heavy, wet snow (and sometimes ice) being thrown from the plow when it comes down the street. That force alone can snap a flimsy post like a twig, and road agencies won't take responsibility for that.

So, what can you do to avoid this terrible winter fate?

How to Protect Your Mailbox Before Winter Hits

Check your mailbox in the fall—if it's wobbly, tighten it or replace it. This will help it survive the onslaught of all the snow a Michigan winter has to offer.

Clear the snow around it before the snowplows come through.

Use sturdier posts or visible markers.

If disaster still strikes, take pictures, call your local road commission, and find out if you qualify for a replacement. But be prepared: Michigan winters are unpredictable, like it or not.
