There were four choices on the table to choose from. How wild are you about this possibility?

If they change the name and mascot, do you think it's the right thing to do? Did you find it offensive? Was it inappropriate? If you went to Okemos and graduated from there, how does this make you feel about your time there?

What about the NFL?

The NFL still has a Chiefs and there isn't a problem, right?

The Okemos Mascot Final Four.

On Thursday it was announced that the results from a community survey would be revealed.

Out with the old Chiefs mascot.

In with something new.

The Okemos School Board voted to get rid of the “Chiefs” moniker in May of last year after students and alumni raised concerns that it was offensive to indigenous people. (WILX)

A lot of community members were actually up in arms about a potential name change. They found nothing wrong with the Chiefs mascot. It's been that way for a while and has some significant historical meaning. None of which people thought was offensive.

The school was named after Chief Okemos and has been since Katie Cavanaugh, a secretary for the Board of Education, was a student at Okemos High School in the 1990s.

The colors would remain the same (Carolina blue and maroon) but a new, inoffensive, and agreed-upon mascot would be put into play.

The choices?

  • Eagles
  • Grizzlies
  • Wolves
  • Owls

And the winner is...

The Okemos School District is considering changing its mascot to the Wolves.

The choice still needs to be formally ratified by the Okemos school board.

Once approved, students will have the chance to submit ideas and designs for a new logo. (WLNS)

The final name for the school board to consider will be presented at their next meeting this coming Monday. Board members will make it official when they vote during their Feb. 14 meeting. (WILX)
