Stepping Into Spartan History at the 2025 Izzo 5K
When I signed up for the 6th annual Izzo 5K, I didn’t know that I would be a part of history... or such a big crowd. I was just there to walk and so were over 7000 other people.
The race celebrated the longest-tenured coach in the Big 10 and the winningest coach in Michigan State University history, Tom Izzo. It offered multiple options—running to walking and even rolling...and the proceeds benefit the Izzo Legacy Foundation, the charitable organization established by Coach Izzo and his wife, Lupe. The Izzo Legacy Foundation partners with local charities to fulfill the promise the Izzo family has made to give back to MSU and the greater Mid-Michigan community.

There were over 7000 participants in the 2025 race. According to Coach Izzo during his race day announcements, that attendance made it the second-largest 5K in Michigan. A quick internet search shows he may be right. The Amway River Bank Run in Grand Rapids has about 10,000 people in attendance. The Detroit Free Press Marathon has a 5K component and last year’s results show around 2500 participants.

While I’m sure Coach Izzo would prefer first place, the 2025 Izzo Run/Walk/Roll 5K will still go down in MSU history as one of the most well-attended events on campus. It’s also one that will make a lasting impact on the Izzo Legacy Foundation’s charity partners.
I need to take a minute to thank one participant, Ms. Ruth. She was my inspiration throughout the whole thing; helping me finish strong and achieve my personal best for a Michigan 5K walk. Thank you, new race friend Ruth. You helped me make another great Michigan memory.
