These New Laws Go Into Effect in Michigan in 2025
In just a few short day, we are going to leave 2024 in the past and enter into 2025.
A New Year brings a fresh start and resolutions. But besides trying to improve ourselves, there's something else all Michiganders need to take stock of in the New Year, and that is new laws.
New Laws in Michigan in 2025
As we head into 2025, there are some new Michigan laws going into effect that could have an impact on you.
Here's a look at each law going into effect and what they mean.
Michigan's minimum wage is going up twice during 2025, based on the Improved Workforce Opportunity Wage Act. The first increase is effective January 1st, and will take minimum wage from $10.33 an hour to $10.56 an hour. The minimum wage for minors will increase from $8.78 per hour to $8.98, and tipped workers will for from $3.93 per hour to $4.01.

The second increase will take effect on February 21st, and will take minimum wage up to $12.48 per hour. Minors will see their minimum wage increase to $10.61 per hour, and tipped workers will see a big increase to $5.99 per hour. Also, starting "in 2025, tipped employees will make 48% of the of the minimum hourly wage."
Legislation affecting Michigan's earned sick time was passed through a voter initiative back in 2018. However, it didn't go into effect until the Michigan Supreme Court approved it in July 2024.
Starting February 1st, 2025, all Michigan employers will be required to provide designated sick time to its employees.
How much sick time will vary from situation to situation.
- Employees will accrue sick time at a rate of 1 hour for ever 30 hours worked.
- Businesses with 10 or more employees will be required to provide at least 72 hours of paid sick time per year.
- Businesses with less than 10 employees will be required to provide at least 40 hours of paid sick time per year, plus an additional 32 hours of unpaid sick time.
3. Automatic Voter Registration
Starting June 30th, the Michigan Secretary of State will automatically register anyone who applies for a license or ID, who is eligible, to register to vote. If you don't want to be registered, the S.O.S will send you a notice of registration, which will have instructions on how to decline.
The Michigan House Bill 4511 will affect laws regarding child safety restraints. With this new law, kids 12 or younger must be in the rear seat in a vehicle. There are different requirements based on age and height, which you can check out HERE.
5. School Cardiac Emergency Response Plan
Michigan House Bills 5527-5528 will affect current regulations regarding school sponsored athletic events. These changes will go into place at the start of the 2025-2026 school year.
The Michigan Association of School Boards says that schools having remodeling or new construction done can use a build design contractor, which wasn't an option they previously had.
