What are Those Weird Balls of Leaves in Michigan Trees?
Yes, I know... leaves have trees. But, I'm not talking about those normal leaves you find along the branches of trees. No, I'm talking about those weird balls of leaves we're starting to see all over Michigan trees.
If you've lived in Michigan long enough to have been through at least one winter, you've definitely seen these odd sights.
If you don't know what I'm talking about, the next time you walk or drive by some trees where most of the leaves have fallen down, keep an eye out for these balls.
These balls of leaves are typically pretty decent in size, about the size of a soccer ball, and they sit on the branches. And, while they may look like bird nests, turns out, they aren't!

However, just because they aren't nests for birds, doesn't mean they aren't nests.
So, if they aren't bird nests, what are they?
Turns out, they are squirrel nests, or dreys.
How Can You Tell the Difference Between Bird Nests and Squirrel Nests?
Bird nests and squirrel nests, while similar looking, do have some major differences.
When building their nests, birds usually go for twigs, found objects, and fur/hair. Additionally, their nests are built higher up and further towards the edges of the branches.
When it comes to squirrels, they gravitate towards leaves, and will build their nests much closer towards the tree trunk.
There you have it... now you don't have to worry about those weird leaf balls you keep seeing in trees. The more you know!
