Today are the p-r-e-l-i-m-i-n-a-r-i-e-s for the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington, DC. Michigan is well-represented in this year's competition as eleven contestants from our great state are participating in the spelling competition. One of those contestants is Ian Shasha--speller #150--who is from Jackson, Michigan. According to SpellingBee.com, Ian is an 8th grader at Parkside Middle School. He loves to play the violin, has a brown belt in karate and enjoys science fiction books. The other Michigan spellers come from Grand Rapids, Pontiac, St. Joseph, Shelby Township, Iron Mountain and more. See ALL of the Michigan spellers--and find out more bout them--by clicking here.

You can watch the competition at various times today on ESPN 3 and the finals will be broadcast tomorrow, Thursday, June 1st on ESPN 2 and ESPN. (Click here for competition info.) Also, my thanks to Banana Don for letting me know that there was an official 'Spelling Bee' website...I had no idea!! :)
