Is Michigan One of the 13 States That Has an Official State Dog?
Growing up and going to school in Michigan, it's inevitable that you end up learning about the state of Michigan and all its "official" things.
Like, the official state flower, for instance, is the apple blossom.
The official state stone is the Petoskey stone.
Our official state fish is the Brook trout.
The state mammal is the white tailed deer.
And the official state bird is the robin.
But, what about a state dog?
Does Michigan even have an official state dog?
States That Have Official "State Dogs"
It turns out that 13 states across the country DO have an official state dog.
And only one state (Maine) has an official cat (Maine Coon), but we're talking about dogs...

Back in 2021, a resolution was brought forth from one of the Michigan House of Representatives, Padma Kuppa (D-Troy), to make "shelter dogs" the official designation for state pet.
However, Michigan is not currently one of the 13 states that has an official state dog.
The states that do include;
- Alaska - Alaskan Malamute
- Connecticut - Siberian Husky
- Louisiana - Catahoula Leopard Dog
- Maryland - Chesapeake Bay Retriever
- Massachusetts - Boston Terrier
- New Hampshire - Chinook
- North Carolina - Plott Hound
- Pennsylvania - Great Dane
- South Carolina - Boykin Spaniel
- Tennessee - Bluetick Coonhound
- Texas - Blue Lacy
- Virginia - American Foxhound
- Wisconsin - American Water Spaniel
But, if and when Michigan does get an official state dog or state pet, I feel like "rescue animals" would be perfect. Perhaps shining a bit of a light on how much adoption would mean to those animals sitting in shelters.
