Michigan has some tough brown recluse spiders that laugh at the cold
According to MLive.com, the MSU Extension staff reports a brown recluse spider - usually not found this far north - was found living in an "unheated detached garage" in Davison, Michigan (in the Flint area) and apparently had survived the winter there. Brown recluse spiders are only about the size of a quarter with their legs extended, but they can give you (or your pets) a nasty bite. If you think you've been bitten by one, all the advice I've read is to get to an ER right away. Most bites don't cause serious problems, but everybody reacts differently to the bite - so, just go to the ER.
According to LiveScience.com, "though hundreds of brown recluses may be present in a house, they may not be easily observed because of their reclusive, nocturnal habits."
So, that's comforting, huh?
