Did you know that you have to worry about quicksand in Michigan?

Granted, growing up in the 90s, TV and movies did have me believing that I'd be encountering quicksand at least once in my life. But I never thought Michigan had quicksand. I figured that was in places like the jungle or desert.

What Causes Quicksand in Michigan?

Well, hold on to your Faygo, because it can happen right here in the Mitten State.

Quicksand in Michigan happens in the spring time thanks to the constant freeze-thaw cycles that happen. With constant temperature swings and snowmelt, there's a ton of extra moisture in the sand. That waterlogged sand loses its strength and can cause you to sink.

Just ask Mitchell O'Brien.

A Michigan Man’s Close Call With Quicksand

Mitchell is a Michigan man who was rock hounding at a beach on Michigan's northwest coast when he stepped into quicksand. Within seconds, he sank to his waist. He tried for about 15 minutes to get himself out unsuccessfully, until he and the person he was with (who later became his girlfriend) called 911 for help.

Firefighters were able to rescue Mitchell and all is well for him, but what a scary situation to be in.

How to Avoid Quicksand on Michigan Beaches

While it's not super common, it is possible. So, here's how you avoid it:

  • Springtime is when it's most likely to occur
  • Don't walk in shallow water over sand, especially around snowmelt, rain, or sudden temperature changes
  • Bring a walking stick or fishing pole to test the ground before you walk on it

What to Do If You Get Stuck in Quicksand

But, if you do find yourself stuck, here's what you should do:

  • stay calm
  • call for help
  • get rid of anything heavy that you have to make yourself lighter
  • spread your weight across the surface (try to lean back and slightly wiggle yourself out, like floating away, as opposed to climbing out)

While it's not the biggest thing to be worried about on Michigan beaches, just know that quicksand is totally a possibility, and not just reserved for TV and movies.
