U.S News & World Report is out with its annual rankings of America's colleges and universities, and there's good news for a few Michigan schools.

The Mitten State has two universities within the nation's top 100, and seven within the Top 300.

How U.S. News & World Report Ranks Universities

U.S. News & World Report has been releasing annual rankings for American institutions of higher education for more than 40 years, with the stated mission of "helping parents and students find the perfect school."

Two dozen different factors are considered when determining the rankings. A university's peer assessment is the single factor given the most weight, followed by graduation rates and financial resources per student. Other criteria include first-year retention rates, borrower debt, and faculty salaries.

How Do Michigan's Universities Rank?

The U.S. News & World Report rankings divide colleges and universities into several different subcategories. The list below includes schools in the "National Universities" category, which "offer a full range of undergraduate majors, plus master's and doctoral programs. These colleges also are committed to producing groundbreaking research."

A deeper dive into the data for each individual university helps to identify areas in which it excels. For instance, Michigan State University's Supply Chain Management/Logistics program is rated #1 in the nation. The University of Michigan is ranked as the nation's top school for Marketing, and second for Production/Operations Management.
