A once thought-to-be-extinct sequoia tree is cropping up all over Michigan.
I know, when you read 'sequoia', you probably think of California. But, because of the interesting history of the dawn redwood, you'll find sequoia trees all over the Mitten State.

It was thought to be extinct, but was rediscovered in China in the 1940s and has since been planted all over the world, including here in Michigan.
What Does a Dawn Redwood Look Like?
Although it belongs to the sequoia family, it is actually the smallest of the bunch, only reaching about 100 feet tall compared to its giant California relatives.

Where Can You Find Sequoia Trees in Michigan?
Dawn redwoods have been planted in several locations throughout Michigan and thrive in parks, botanical gardens, and even on college campuses.
One of the most well-known is at Michigan State University, where a massive dawn redwood stands tall, even after being struck by lightning!
