What About Sergei Federov As The Next Red Wings Coach?
What would you think if Steve Yzerman hired his former teammate, arguably one of the most talented players in the history of the Detroit Red Wings, as the team's new head coach?
No, I'm not talking about Niklas Lidstrom. Or even Steve Yzerman himself. I'm talking about #91 himself, Sergei Federov (pictured above).
Before everyone starts laughing at that suggestion, Federov has been a successful coach in the Russian Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He led CSKA Moscow to the Gagarin Cup title this past season, his first in the KHL.
And the other suggestions to replace Jeff Blashill behind the bench don't really appeal to the fan base. Do you really want guys like Barry Trotz, Bruce Cassidy, or John Tortorella?? All have good credentials, but aren't a sexy name. And of the guys that have appeal, they just won't get. They can't get Gerard Gallant, he's coaching the New York Rangers right now in the Stanley Cup Playoffs. And they can't get Lane Lambert, who was just elevated to the head coaching job with the New York Islanders. Both guys are former Yzerman teammates with the Wings.
Now, I don't think Sergei will be the next head coach of the Red Wings, for reasons stated in the article seen here. Remember, because of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, the NHL has suspended all relationships with Russia at this time.
But his name being behind the bench would invigorate a frustrated fanbase, not unlike the frsutrated fanbases of the other three Detroit pro sports teams who keep on losing.
I'm just throwing this out there, what do you guys think?? Let us know!!
