There’s A LOT More Bears in Michigan
Since the year 2000, the black bear population in northern lower Michigan has risen 50%. According to the Free Press, the DNR says there are now about 10,000 bears in the U.P. and about 5000 bears under the bridge. (If you don't know what that means - watch out for that bridge)
The good news is - we have a healthy bear population and hunting season harvest quotas will probably increase. The bad news - you'll have to watch your picnic basket a little closer this summer.
