The Abandoned 1922 Belle Isle Golf Course
WARNING: Under no circumstances should you enter this property. By doing so you risk bodily harm and/or prosecution for trespassing on private property.
Not to be confused with Belle Isle's current golf course, the old one sits overgrown by the roadside and abandoned in the woods, through a dismal swamp on the island's east side.
According to Detroit Urbex, the course was just a nine-holer that opened in 1922. Once the MacArthur Bridge was built in 1923, Detroiters could now drive over to the island to golf, rather than take a slow boat.
The course had a concession stand, clubhouse, a cool covered bridge, picnic area, restrooms, and maintenance shed. As the decades wore on, the money ran out. By 2008 there were not sufficient funds to maintain the grounds; the course now only opened sporadically and later that year it closed down.
Those who golfed there thru the 90s and early 2000s were impressed at how well-kept the course was. Unfortunately, in 2009, just one year after closing, the course had become weedy, overgrown, more swampy, bug-infested, and unrecognizable to what it once was.
All that's left are a few overgrown buildings in the woods, the old covered bridge, and some benches hidden in the weeds.
The old abandoned golf course sits across from the still-open driving range and boat club. Rumors of turning it into an alpaca park have been circulating, but.....
If you're ever on the island driving, you could possibly go by the course and not even know it. Take a look at a few photos...
