Probably the last thing you want to encounter while walking around Holland is a mountain lion, but according to some rumors that have been milling around, that might happen.

A conversation that came up recently in a group of people and happenings in Holland led to people sharing what they feel may be good evidence that there could be some BIG cats located in the area.

One person even said they were lucky enough to snag a picture of one of them during the winter:

We had one in our yard near Riley and Lakeshore in Holland years ago, during the winter. He jumped up on an Adirondack chair, so we had a size comparison. We got a photo of it. DNR didn’t want to hear about it.

Other Big Cats Nearby

There was an incident just a few months ago in Illinois where a call came in about an accident involving what the victims thought was a deer but ended up being an actual mountain lion.

Holland Has Big Cats

Others chiming in the conversation claim the cougars have actually been in the area for years:

There have been big cat sightings all over Allegan County. Vets have even confirmed that horses have been attacked by them. My father-in-law work for the DNR for 42 years and they are here.

If you ever cross paths with one, the safest thing you can do is maintain eye contact. Never run past or away from a mountain lion. Don't bend over or crouch down. Aggressively wave your arms, throw stones or branches, and do not turn away.
