According to the latest statistics, Mackinac Island qualifies as the city with the fifth highest violent crime rate in Michigan. With the city of Flint BEHIND it at #6.

Calm down - the overwhelming odds are that you won't get beat up for your fudge, if you go there next summer. This is a statistics thing. According to MLive.com, Mackinac Island has just under 500 year round residents. During the summer, the number of people on the island is somewhere between 15,000 and 18,000 on any given day. There were eight personal assaults reported on the island last year. And that number was attributed to the 500 residents - not any of the thousands of tourists - who sometimes (looking at you presidential campaign workers) exhibit bad behavior.

So, the real ranking when all those tourists are taken into account is way down the list - like #343.

Phew. For a minute, I thought I'd have to park my yacht someplace else next summer.
