Sometimes it seems like the orange-and-white construction barrel should be the state mascot of Michigan.

We see them everywhere, and they're not going away anytime soon.

There are a slew of road construction projects underway on secondary routes around the Lansing area, but what about U.S. 127? What's going on there?

A newly-constructed bridge from southbound U.S. 127 onto westbound I-496 in Lansing was recently opened to motorists, and ongoing construction on the northbound side near the exit for Michigan Avenue and Kalamazoo Street in Lansing is expected to be completed in the coming weeks.

Repaving along U.S. 127 both directions south of Lansing between Kipp Road and the Jackson County line should be finished up later this year as well.

The map above shows the section of U.S. 127 that MDOT wants to upgrade to a three-lane highway each direction, with construction proposed to be complete by 2025. Officials say the change would "address safety concerns, improve roadway geometrics, and improve vehicular movement, all while keeping future maintenance concerns, the environment, and cost-effectiveness in mind for road users" in the coming years.

Temporary access restrictions to and from the Jolly Road/Dunckel Road exits and the Trowbridge Road exits from U.S. 127 could be necessary, although no official traffic restrictions have been planned just yet.

MDOT calls this a major project that would also include "improving and rebuilding bridges through this segment, as well as upgrades to drainage, signs, intelligent transportation systems, and pavement markings."

Following that project, MDOT plans to turn its sights to improving U.S. 127 from Kalamazoo Street northward to the I-69 interchange. That project is not expected to begin until sometime in 2025.
