While much of the United States got a good look at the Northern Lights the night of November 11, 2025, most of Michigan got shut out of the party thanks to thick clouds overhead.

Aurora hopefuls, all is not lost — experts say there's a decent chance Michiganders have another chance to see them tonight.

The Northern Lights aren't typically visible from Lower Michigan, but can sometimes be seen when the conditions are right. According to NOAA, we're currently in the midst of a moderate geomagnetic storm that could enhance the possibility of being able to see the aurora further south than usual again tonight.

How the Kp Index Predicts Aurora Visibility

Aurora forecasts are based on the Kp index, which ranges from 0 to 9. The higher the number, the better the chances of seeing the Northern Lights further south.

Tonight's forecast has the Kp index at a 6. NOAA says "for Kp in the range 6 to 7, the aurora will move even further from the poles and will become quite bright and active. At this geomagnetic activity level, it might be possible to see the aurora from the northern edge of the United States."

For comparison purposes, the index was at an 8 last night, when the aurora could be seen as far south as South Carolina and Texas.

Tonight’s Forecast: Better Viewing Conditions?

WILX News 10 Chief Meteorologist Darrin Rockcole believes weather conditions in Mid-Michigan should cooperate tonight if the aurora does.

"Hopefully less cloud cover will allow more of us to see them," Rockcole says. "Remember you need to get away from city lights for the best viewing."

Space.com describes the phenomenon as an event where "energize particles of the sun" collide with the upper atmosphere. The particles are redirected thanks to the Earth's magnetic field which then creates the colorful nighttime lights. Conditions on May 10-12 helped push the Northern Lights farther south.
