Michigan Smokes the Rest of the Country in Marijuana Sales

Revealing new data showing where legal cannabis sales in America are most robust shows that Michigan is highest in the nation. Literally.

What started as a budding industry (legally) in the Mitten State in 2019 has grown very quickly - wildly beyond experts' expectations.

According to MJBiz, Michigan logged roughly $22 million in legal recreational cannabis sales in March 2020. Compare that to $240 million in March 2023. The state broke the grass ceiling with $3 billion in total legal recreational marijuana sales for 2023 as a whole, and is on track for an even bigger 2024.

There's Money in Michigan Marijuana

Michiganders drop more green on marijuana per month than any other state, according to MJBiz.

Most recent figures show the average monthly marijuana spend per capita in Michigan is $27.57. For comparison purposes, Colorado is second at $19.10.

Michigan also leads all other states in the number of units of marijuana sold (total number of items). The Mitten rolled out a state record 25 million units in May 2024. California - with a population almost 4 times that of Michigan - sold 17 million units the same month, good enough for second place.

Flower to the People

The statistics are rather blunt.

Nearly half (47%) of Michigan marijuana sales so far in 2024 have been flower, according to data published by MJBiz. That's more than vapes (18%), pre-rolls (17%) and edibles (11%) combined.

Whether Michigan will stay high atop the national sales charts for years to come remains to be seen. Florida voters will soon decide whether to legalize weed in the Sunshine State; if they do, that state might become Michigan's buzz kill.
