This time of year, Michigan is going through two seasons simultaneously: summer and construction.

With only so many "good weather" months to take advantage of, Michigan has to fit in as much construction as possible during that time. Which means there are LOTS of work zones.

With so much construction happening in Michigan, it might be time for a refresher when it comes to laws.

What Michigan Law Says About Work Zones

Construction work zones are filled with various signage; some indicate alternate routes and others what might be coming ahead. Additionally, we've all seen those signs that say you could face a fine if you injure a construction worker.

But, there's a lot more to it than that. You could face serious penalties as well as serious injury or death of yourself and others whether you're in or outside your vehicle.

Michigan Construction Zone Laws and Penalties

MDOT tells us the facts to know when it comes to work zone laws.

  • Speeding fines are doubled in work zones
  • The number of points assessed for speeding are increased: 3 points for >10 over, 4 points for 10 - 15 mph over, and 5 points for speeding more than 15 mph over
  • Insurance rates will increase
  • Andy's Law creates penalties of fines and time in prison for injuring or killing ANYONE in work zones: up to $7,500 in fines and up to 15 years in jail
