According to the Detroit News, there are quite a few athletes with ties to Michigan competing today at the 2016 Olympics. Some of them are actually residents, while a few went to school here and a few trained here at Northern Michigan.

Claressa Shields, from Flint, has already earned a gold medal for boxing in the London Olympics, but boxing today will be her teammate - Mikaela Mayer, a boxer from L.A. who went to Northern Michigan University on a boxing scholarship for one semester, before they cut funding for the program. She's had an interesting life and you may recognize her. ABCs Nightline did a story about her. Check it out here:
