Honestly, I could sit and watch the big ships go through the Soo Locks all day long. If you haven't made the trip to the Soo Locks, and you're anywhere close this summer - do it.

Apart from being an engineering marvel, you might be surprised at just how important the Soo Locks are. The biggest ships go though the Poe Lock, which is 1200 feet long and 110 feet wide. A study determined that if the Poe became disabled for just six months, the slowdown of freight and raw materials needed by factories would force the entire American economy into a recession. On Friday, according to the Free Press, a new report from the Army Corps of Engineers confirmed what everybody's known for 30 years - we need to build a new lock system.

It won't be cheap. It will cost about a billion dollars and take up to ten years to build, but it will provide jobs for as many as 15,000 people.

Now, all that's left is Congress agreeing to fund the project.

I'm sure that'll go smoothly.
