Here in Michigan, we are no stranger to deer showing up in our yards, fields or even cemeteries. Occasionally we'll have some more exotic animals and there have been many reports over the years of alligators showing up in Michigan areas.

However, it's not every day you hear about a kangaroo hopping through a Michigan neighborhood but that's exactly what the fine folks of Lapeer County were treated to on Wednesday, March 23rd!

A Kangaroo Caught on Video in a Michigan Cemetery?

Wednesday, I was scrolling through social media when I came across a video, shared from TikTok, of a kangaroo hopping through a cemetery.

Assuming it was maybe a video from Australia or something, I figured kangaroos were to Australians what deer are to us, and almost kept scrolling until I saw the caption written by the video's creator, Alex McCarty (@alexmccarty_): "I saw a kangaroo on the way to work today… In Michigan!!!!!!"

Lapeer County Animal Control Called in to Catch the Kangaroo

Absolutely bewildered by it all, there had to be more to this story! Surely, McCarty wasn't the only person to see this...right?

Turns out another Lapeer County woman, Sara Greer, also saw the kangaroo in her driveway before making a hop, skip and a jump over to the cemetery, as reported by WFTV9.

Greer promptly called 911, though the dispatcher, probably thinking she was being bamboozled, was skeptical at first.

"'I say I’m located in southern Lapeer County and there is a pause and she responds, ‘Ma’am, are you sure it’s a kangaroo?’ and I said, ‘Yes, I’m sure!’” Greer told FOX2.

From there, though, WFTV9 reports the dispatcher then called Lapeer County Animal Control and eventually the owner was able to bring the kangaroo, named Douglas, home.

Is it Legal to Own a Kangaroo in Michigan?

Of course, having your kangaroo escape on you is a sure-fire way to get caught having one and get into some trouble, right? Apparently not in Michigan.

According to WFTV9, Douglas' owner has a license for exotic pets, like kangaroos.

“Now I’m trying to convince (my husband) not to get another dog but a kangaroo,” Greer said...a statement many couples who are on the fence on getting a pet would probably relate to.

If you, like Greer and Douglas' owner want either a kangaroo or any other kind of unique pet, check Michigan's regulations for Exotic, Circus, and Zoo Animals.

LOOK: Here are the pets banned in each state

Because the regulation of exotic animals is left to states, some organizations, including The Humane Society of the United States, advocate for federal, standardized legislation that would ban owning large cats, bears, primates, and large poisonous snakes as pets.
