It was just last week that we heard about St. Clair Shores K9 Officer Axe who was shot and died in the line of duty (you can read about that here). Now, something is being done to protect a K-9 Officer here in Lansing.

According to the Lansing State Journal, Chief, a K-9 with the Lansing Police Department, was gifted something "that may save his life while out in the field." That gift was a Kevlar vest. The German Shepherd now has a vest that will help protect his life from bullets and stabbings, which in turn may help him to protect his human partner while in the line of duty.

The Kevlar vest, which runs about $2,000, was donated to Chief from the nonprofit group, Vested Interest in K-9s Inc. And currently, Chief is the only Police K-9 with a vest, but that's something the Lansing Police Department hopes to change, as they want to make sure the rest of their K-9 unit (dogs Django, Fury, Mako, Duke, and Mac) is also protected. However, after food health care, and training for the Police dogs, there isn't a lot of money left in their budget to buy vests. Which is why Chief's vest was sponsored by Tim Bastian of Southgate. Thank you Tim! If you'd like to read more about the Lansing K-9 unit or to see how you can help sponsor a vest, click here.
