Lake Michigan Gets Its First National Park
Congratulations to Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore, which has officially been designated Indiana Dunes National Park. The park is on the Lake Michigan lakeshore, in Indiana.
According to MLive.com, Indiana Dunes was one of four national lakeshores in the U.S. One is in Wisconsin and Michigan has the other two - Sleeping Bear Dunes on Lake Michigan and Pictured Rocks, in the U.P., on Lake Superior. Our one National Park is still Isle Royale National Park.
Indiana Dunes covers 15,000 acres and attracts about 3.5 million people every year.
Sleeping Bear Dunes is over 71,000 acres and was named "The Most Beautiful Place in America", in 2011. Pictured Rocks covers 73,000 acres and was the first place to be designated a National Lakeshore. It has waterfalls and 100 year old sunken ships that wash up on the beach.
But Indiana Dunes gets named a full out National Park? Hmmm. It's probably better that we keep Sleeping Bear Dunes and Pictured Rocks under the radar anyway
