There is no law that allows the use of red light cameras in the state of Michigan.

Don't jump for joy yet! You can still get a ticket for running a red light.

Get Jerry says that

Michigan is one of 19 states that has yet to pass that allows the use of red light cameras. However, if an officer observes you running a red light, you can still get a ticket. If you feel you've received a red light ticket by mistake, you need to know what your options are for challenging the citation.

If you receive a red light citation, you can be fined up to $100 in Michigan. Also, you could get demerit points added to your driving record.

Ban On Red Light Cameras

In 2022, the Michigan Senate approved the removal of tickets and other enforcement that come from traffic light cameras.

The bill which banned red light cameras was passed with a 28-10 margin.

According to the bill,

Any citation issued on the basis of a recorded image produced by a photographic traffic signal enforcement system in violation of this section is void.

So, beware of fake red light camera tickets!

Get Jerry says that.

Because Michigan doesn't use red light cameras, any tickets claiming to come from a camera is likely a scam. Only law enforcement officials can issue tickets. If you are unsure whether your ticket is legit or not, call the court to check.
