The National Insurance Crime Bureau (NICB) reviews data from the previous year of theft to determine which cars will be most desired for the next year, and based on 2024 data, no imports made Michigan's grand theft auto wish list.

2025 Theft Rankings: No Imports?

Last year's number one most stolen car in Michigan was the Kia Sportage. It didn't even make the list. In fact, 8 of 10 of 2024's list were imports, whereas this year, there isn't a single one on the list.

Since 2020, videos showing how to steal imported vehicles began trending on social media, giving everyone in Michigan and around the country a "Beginners Guide to Grand Theft Auto." As the trend gained traction in more and more feeds, an increasing number of imported cars started to disappear.

Kia, Honda, and Hyundai all made significant improvements to their new vehicles, including security upgrades that prevent hackers from accessing their electronic systems, which allowed them to bypass most anti-theft systems and drive away undetected.
