According to Word Unscrambler at Unscramblerer.com, everyone's favorite Words With Friends and Wordle cheat code, Michiganders and most of America spent the first half of 2026 collectively raising their hands and asking, "Wait, what does this mean?"

Word Unscrambler analyzed Google search data from January 1 through July 7, 2026, and uncovered the nation's 10 most-searched word definitions. In addition, they revealed the most searched word in Michigan. More on that later.

America's Most Searched Word Definition

"Gaslighting" was the most-searched word definition nationwide, averaging 286,900. In case you were unaware, gaslighting means manipulating someone into doubting their own memory or perception. Its popularity isn't shocking. Between dating apps, political arguments, and family group chats, half the country, including Michigan, is probably searching the definition while the other half insists the person searching already knows the answer.

Using Google Trends and Ahrefs data, Word Unscrambler found these were America's most-searched definitions:

  1. Gaslighting: Manipulating someone into doubting reality.
  2. Love: Deep affection or emotional attachment.
  3. Fascism: Authoritarian government with centralized power.
  4. Empathy: Understanding someone else's feelings.
  5. Integrity: Doing what is right without applause.
  6. Metaphor: A direct comparison without using "like" or "as."
  7. Narcissist: Someone with extreme self-focus and limited empathy.
  8. Culture: Shared beliefs, customs, and behaviors.
  9. Democracy: Government powered by the people
  10. Bias: A preference or prejudice affecting judgment.

The list is pretty telling and suggests that Americans need help understanding relationships, government, and middle-school English.

Michigan's Most-Searched Word Definition

Michigan's most-searched definition, however, was "evidence." This term tracks for the Mitten State, where we don't want rumors, vague Facebook posts, or your neighbor's cousin's "inside source." Michiganders want proof, documentation, and receipts.
