Now that we're safely into spring (hope I didn't just jinx us) it's time to think about morel mushrooms. According to WILX-TV, morel mushrooms are starting to show up around Michigan. If you've never gone mushroom hunting, ask around - SOME-body you know or work with will help you out, or take you mushroom hunting - and hopefully help you fry them up. And, unlike deer-hunting, judgy people don't frown on you doing this in your suburban backyard. If you have some dead trees in your backyard - even better. Morel mushrooms love dead elm and ash trees. And they grow well in spots recently hit by wildfires.

Another thing judgy neighbors will frown upon. Go figure.

Here's the story from Channel 10, with a helpful Michigan DNR map of recent wildfires and prescribed burns. Two things - make sure you've got a REAL morel mushroom on your plate and remember, it's nice to share. I'll bring the beer.
