What Ever Happened to Igloo Dining?
Winter in Michigan kind of marks the end of the outdoor dining season. Sure, there are places that have heaters and or enclosed patios, but whatever happened to igloo dining?
I feel like dining in an igloo began as a super cool trend and a neat way to make the most of winter in Michigan. Bars and restaurants were taking advantage of having the extra tables despite Michigan's colder months not being super hospitable.
And then, when Covid first hit, it impacted restaurants and bars a great deal. How do you do spaced dining inside a restaurant full of people? The solution? More outdoor and igloo dining.
Igloo Dining in Lansing and Mid-Michigan
Lansing and the greater Mid-Michigan area was no stranger to igloo dining to help bring customers and money back to the business. Places like the Lansing Brewing Company, Cafe Sports in Perry, One North on Lansing's west side, and more all featured igloo dining. However, it seems like none of them are going to have it this season.
Places like Horrocks Farm Market and The Peanut Barrel are still doing some kind of heated outdoor dining. Horrocks has a heated greenhouse and The Peanut Barrel in Downtown East Lansing has a heated patio area. But sadly, no more igloos.
Did this trend end as quickly as it began? Were they really only popular because of Covid?
If you happen to know of any place in the Mid-Michigan area or beyond that is going to feature igloo dining this winter, please let us know and shoot us a message with the station app.
Stay warm out there!
